Preference for PFL, Spotlight: Meet Michele Payn, Things You May Have Missed and more...
PFL ( Patient-first or Person-first Language)
We prefer people who comment or post on our platforms use PFL.
"Remember, the patient HAS a condition, the patient IS NOT the condition"
If your patient or client prefers to be addressed or referred to in a specific way using identity first language (IFL), that should of course be honored and respected preferentially.
"It’s important to recognize that the disability community is not a monolith, and a person might have a preference that differs from other folks in their community. If you’re wondering what’s the best way to identify friends, co-workers or others, all it takes is a willingness to follow their lead."

Spotlight: Meet author, speaker, farmer, mom - Michele Payn
1. Why is it important for dietitians to learn about agriculture/farming?
“…Clearly agriculture and dietetics share an interest in evidence-based information, but it’s difficult to really understand the context of food issues if you don’t know how the product is produced… If you don’t learn about agriculture from the firsthand experts, how are you really going to be able to understand the context of food claims?”
2. If a dietitian wants to learn more, what are some resources: books, state/ag resources, podcasts you would recommend? “…I recommend you connect with your state Farm Bureau to learn more about agriculture in your area or opportunities for RDNs - such as CEU credits, farm tours, panel opportunities, etc. Of course, I recommend the Food Bullying podcast that RDN Nicole Rodriguez and I co-host; there are 110+ episodes specifically designed to help the dietetic community through our conversations with farmers, veterinarians, dietitians, scientists,….My friend Leah McGrath will be featured as the first episode of 2024, talking about the value of Build Up Dietitians and expected nutrition trends …Other interesting resources include Talking Biotech podcast with Kevin Folta, Food Science Babe, the Genetic Literacy Project, Adam Grant, Alliance for Science…and IFIC …:”

Newsletter Recommendation: “Well To Do” by Rina Raphael
Don’t miss Rina’s most recent issue where she gives a shout out for Build Up Dietitians. How Wellness Is Staying Ahead of Consumer Skepticism (substack.com) Rina mentions the fearmongering by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on GMO’s, glyphosate (herbicide) and UPFs. If you’re interested in reading more about what’s going on with the AAP’s paper aimed at physicians and their “Healthy Children” post for parents check out the post by Michelle Miller (Farm Babe) on her Facebook page that mentions a slew of citations collected by physician and farmer Nicole Keller that counter the AAP misinformation.
