💡Spotlight: 2️⃣Questions for Science Communicator - Jonathan Jarry
Contact Jonathan Jarry: Jonathan Jarry MSc - Science Communicator | Office for Science and Society - McGill University
Q1: What are "red flags”🚩🚩 of quackery and pseudoscience that you see most frequently on websites/social media platforms?
Answer: “The two most frequent ones I see in the health space are the appeal to nature and the appeal to antiquity. If someone is telling you their product is natural and therefore good for you, beware. Plenty of natural things are harmful to us and many synthetic products are perfectly safe. We need to test both to know how safe and effective they are. And just because an intervention has been practiced for thousands of years does not mean that it works (and you may want to see if it really used to be done in the way it is practiced today, because odds are it didn't!).”
Q2: What are your "go to" websites or resources for fact checking information on health?
Answer: “As a science communicator, I always strive to go back to primary sources, meaning the scientific papers themselves. For people who can't access those or don't have the skillset to critically appraise them, I recommend PainScience.com for all things pain related; the Skeptic's Dictionary; Dr. Andrea Love's ImmunoLogic newsletter; and, of course, our very own Office for Science and Society at McGill University, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year!”
