Pesticides and organic farming, CDR makes changes to the RD Exam, Easter gift ideas for RDs and some new moderators
🍓🍓This image is from the Safe Fruits and Veggies calculator which uses data from the EPA (which, by the way, is the SAME data the fearmongering group EWG uses). Just to make sure this is clear. This isn’t 453 strawberries - it’s 453 SERVINGS of strawberries.
A few people got pretty riled up when this image was posted this past week, still convinced that our fruits and vegetables are being “doused” with pesticides - unless they are organic. Once again…organic farmers can and often do use pesticides. Below is a Xerces Society chart of pesticides approved for use in organic farming in the US and the toxicity level of those pesticides to bees. Whether applying organic or non-organic pesticides, farmers have to be certified and go through training to use pesticides correctly. They also have to observe what is known as a “re-entry interval (REI)” which restricts entry into the field after a pesticide is applied. This done to protect workers. Different pesticides and different crops have different REI. For example, glyphosate, an herbicide (weed killer) has a REI of 12 hours, while copper sulfate, a fungicide, used in both organic and non-organic farms especially for tomatoes and grapes, has an REI of 48 hours.
