Worth a Read: GET OUT!!! (Of Gwyneth Paltrow's Guest House)
“…Gwyneth: (Off Camera, singing) Detox in the morning, detox in the evening, detox at suppertime…. Yoo hoo!! Lonely poor people! I’m here to drop off GP’s Daily Smoothie, made with almond milk, maca, vanilla mushroom protein powder, and Sun’s Potion …”GET OUT!!! (Of Gwyneth Paltrow's Guest House) (substack.com) from Joyce Wadler.
(For more on the real story —yes, Gwyneth really is renting out her 1 BR Guest House—see this piece by Rina Raphael “Gwyneth Paltrow’s Cure for Loneliness: Rent My House”.)
5 Things You May Have Missed….
Podcast Pick
“If This Food Could Talk” - Frozen in Time: Ice Cream and America’s Past
The history of ice cream🍦 around the world. How serving ice cream was a signal of wealth and a status symbol in the 18th century in the U.S. and vanilla ice cream was especially prestigious. Lots of interesting tidbits here like the role of ice cream in the war for morale and the ice cream barge.
(Bonus: Here’s the recipe for homemade rum raisin ice cream mentioned in the podcast - just 6 ingredients! )
Drop In Numbers
There’s a drop 🔻in enrollment in dietetic programs and dietetic internship (the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is aware of this). What are the reasons why? Here’s what some Build Up Dietitians followers think.
This survey (linked below) appeared on-line from the Academy…check it out…do you think it asks the right questions to get to the why behind the drop in enrollment?
“The House of Delegates (HOD) selected “Increasing Student Enrollment” as a critical issue to be evaluated and addressed in the 2023-2024 membership year… the Academy the HOD is looking for member input at all levels to help understand what draws people to the profession and gain insights into any barriers today’s students are encountering. We are asking you to complete the following survey:

Hookworms for Insulin Resistance? (link to study)
🤔Would you be willing to knowingly ingest hookworms to improve your glucose tolerance or reduce insulin resistance? Ted Kyle of ConscienHealth mentioned this study that appeared in Nature Communications in a recent blog post (link to study in the blog post) and here. Yes, some of the study participants had some unpleasant GI side effects…but just think, if the side effects are too bad or the worms don’t work out to reduce your risk of T2 diabetes, you just go through deworming! 🤪

Ongoing Shortages
Apparently, there are still issues with availability (low inventory and completely out of stock) of various infant and pediatric formulas and oral nutrition supplements (ONS) across several brands. But why? Here are some of the reasons we’ve heard from dietitians in our Build Up Dietitians Nutrition Support, Build Up Dietitians Clinical group, and Build UP Dietitians LTC, LTAC, Geriatric Nutrition & Rehab Group.
Julie R. - “…Hormel rep said there is an ingredient shortage…”
Brittany T. - “(Abbott) …manufacturing issue with containers (tetra packs) …”
Aurora C. - “Abbott products being allocated for acute care hospitals only…”
Katie R. - “…(Abbott)…new large inventory issue is due to FDA mandatory closure of a production plant for deep cleaning and inspection…”
Sarah W.-”Prioritizing production of more popular formulas, supply chain limitations.”
Bottom Line: Follow our groups for more information on this, lists of low stock, out of stock and substitutes….and we’ll keep trying to find out what’s going on.
