❓Question of the Day in our Nutrition Support Group
Roxanne: “It’s something completely different every day. You can see the changes you’re making the next day (labs). You have to know a lot more about medicine in general.”
Jessica A.: “I love that it’s like a puzzle - figuring out the best regimen for the patient and adjusting based on labs/ fluid status and whatever else going on medically. And I love that I can really see the impact it has on a patient. Helping them to be stronger, gain wt, etc.”
💡RD Spotlight - Danielle Shine
We spotted Danielle Shine on Threads and really admire (took a shine to) the fact that she takes a strong #stand4science.
(You can find Danielle Shine on all the “socials”)
Who are you/what do you do now?
“I’m an Australian Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist (APD), which is the Australian equivalent of an RDN. I’m also currently undertaking a PhD to examine nutrition misinformation on social media. My overall goal is to explore ways to educate and empower people to critically assess nutrition information, as well as the people who share it on social media.”
Why are you so invested in addressing and debunking misinformation and why should more RDs think about doing this?
“… Before becoming an APD, I spent 14 years working as a media and communication professional in London and Australia. During that time, I lived with a LOT of food noise that was caused by nutrition misinformation…. Ultimately, I developed disordered eating that eventually resulted in an eating disorder…Thankfully, I’ve fully recovered from this experience; becoming a professional chef played a huge part in my recovery, as did going back to uni to study nutrition to become an APD. Now, I feel morally obligated to share evidence-based nutrition information and debunk misinformation via social media. I think more RDs should consider doing this because they’re highly qualified subject matter experts who have the knowledge and power to help safeguard people from nutrition misinformation and the people who spread it…I published research in 2022 that I encourage all RDs to take a look at, for free, here”: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/1747-0080.12765

🍿More Dietitians Dive into “You Are What You Eat” Netflix "documentary”
If you’ll remember, this is the shockumentary based on the Stanford Twin Study that we talked about it in these previous newsletter issues where we highlighted:
Abby Langer: Build UP Catch UP - 1/5/24 - Build Up Catch Up (substack.com)
Ted Kyle: Build Up Book Mark - 12/5/23 - Build Up Catch Up (substack.com)
And now on to the Netflix documentary/shockumentary that supposedly was (loosely) based on the research:
Carrie Dennett writing in the Seattle Times Is it true that ‘You Are What You Eat’? Sorting out the facts | The Seattle Times
“…what alarms me are the statements…. that what we put in our mouths is more important than anything else. Yes, nutrition is important, but it’s only one factor that determines health and only one thing we do that impacts the environment.”
Jessica Wilson on her “Making it Awkward” podcast Diet Evangelism: Netflix’s vegan twin experiment (youtube.com) With guest Jen Jacobs, they react to the documentary including pointing out the blatant commercialism, the weird sex/arousal experiment with one set of the twins, and ask important questions like, “…when did Eric Adams and Cory Booker become vegan experts???”
