📝A Note About Moderation of our Groups
Currently we have 16 closed and private groups ranging from clinic and patient care-focused to public health and wellness. We also have a group just for posting job openings and one for career advice. See the full list of groups here.
Our groups are moderated by a team (20+) moderators, who’ve volunteered and been selected for their experience in those areas.
We recently did a survey of Build UP Dietitians followers that was posted on our Main Facebook page, in all of our groups, on LinkedIn, in our newsletter and on Instagram that got over 400 respondents. One question that was asked was:
❓“What do you like LEAST about Build Up Dietitians?”
Some of the responses indicated an issue that continues to come up, i.e. that we close comments after 20 responses or 7 days in our groups - whichever comes first. This apparently irritates some people, even though this has been part of the group rules for all of our pages for about 2 years now. This policy was agreed upon by moderators and in theory, anyone who joins a group has also agreed to this since it is part of the required entry questions.
To explain why we have this policy:
Moderators have seen that often after a certain point, for many questions, responses become redundant. Sometimes responses get repetitive very quickly, after far fewer than 20.
If people who post a question don’t get the answer they were hoping for/looking for and their post has been closed, they can always clarify and repost.
If moderators don’t close comments at 7 days, we see posts that are 6 months…a year or even 2+years being commented on, long after the original person posting has moved on or would be still looking for a response. This means those old questions will then supersede new questions and be at the top of the timeline.
We don’t delete questions so both the original post and the responses can still be seen and will show up in a key word search. We (moderators) are just trying to make sure questions are answered in a timely way and the person posting the question has the best answer possible.

Q: What made you want to write a book?
A. “…While my clinical practice isn't in pediatrics, as a mother of young kids, I spend a lot of time feeding children and being in environments where children eat…These experiences made me acutely aware of how much opportunity there is to make the meal environments of kids better…. When my toddlers started having big emotions, I felt unprepared as a parent… I found some books written for kids about managing their emotions that had encouraging messages for the parents. When I looked around for something similar in nutrition, I couldn't find any book that I would want to recommend, so I decided to write my own.”
Q: What was your biggest/hardest lesson about writing a book?
The story "What's for Dinner Cockroach?" was written well over a year ago. I didn't know anyone in publishing...I sent my book to several publishers…I kept getting rejection letters! I decided to look with(in) our dietitian community to see if I could find some help. I reached out to the Ellyn Satter Institute and was so honored, surprised and excited when I got a response! The person who I spoke with…asked me if I would consider self-publishing my book - since that's the way Ellyn Satter got started. So, I started looking into it and things started falling into place. I continued to work with the Ellyn Satter Institute throughout to obtain the Seal of Approval and am so happy that I did. I was able to self-publish my book through Amazon Kindle Direct, which is a great option…”

Q: “Any recommendations for motivational interviewing coaching courses online to update skills for use with telehealth? I’ve looked at a couple that are online and include self-study and live training that look great but are expensive and wanted to ask if anyone had taken one that they felt helped them in coaching clients.”
