Q: What's one food trend do you wish got more traction or recognition?
A: “We often get caught up in the negativity that diet culture brings, which might lead to dietitians not wanted to even discuss weight loss concerns. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t many people out there who could benefit from paying closer attention to the portions they consume…. Portion control welcomes eating anything and everything you enjoy…but within the amounts that your body needs. It’s a more realistic approach to enjoying how you look and feel without needing to follow unrealistic ‘allowed’ and ‘avoid’ lists and without jumping onto a trendy plan diet that’s unbalanced or unhealthy.”
Q: If a dietitian would like to become a better writer or get noticed for their writing, what advice you would give them?
Speak in the voice of your audience. Skip the science-y talk…If you’re writing for a magazine or online publication, be sure to use a tone and language that their audiences are accustomed to reading.
Be responsible. When it comes to writing, follow the quote from Spiderman’s Uncle Ben (or Voltaire, since both are credited with this saying): “With great power comes great responsibility.” …be sure that whatever you write is factual, credible and something you won’t want to retract. These days, especially for online stories, your words can live on forever.
