Why I Became Dietitian/NDTR
Cindy Chall-Silva
“My dad had a heart attack when I was 12 and our eating and lifestyle changed overnight. As a kid I thought I was destined for the same fate. I always loved science and kids and thought I’d be a teacher until I took my first nutrition class in college. I learned so much and knew I wanted to teach people about nutrition. I am now a pediatric dietitian and CDCES. Perfect fit for me!”
Amie Flexner Ritchie
“I have always cared about food (and food allergies is a part of that- both mine and other family members). Then I got sick and was diagnosed with IBS (this was in the early '90's). I had IBS D and was being told to increase fiber by my MD. He kept pushing Items that were high in insoluble fiber. I wound up down to 90 pounds…Someone urged me to see an RD.. she taught me about soluble v insoluble fiber and helped me find my GI trigger items, and I now have gained back way more than that but I am healthy and can lead a normal life. When I decided I was burned out and to go back to school and change careers becoming an RD just seemed like a perfect fit.”
Sharon Stuard Lemons
“I went through diabetes education to learn about my own diagnosis. I thought, I could do that!”
Mo Lipnitz
”I started as a bio major but didn’t see a job in the field besides being in a lab, which I didn’t feel was for me. I wanted to stay in the sciences, but also wanted to help people. With the help of my advisor, I found nutrition. Initially I didn’t want to be an RD bc I thought all they did was tell people what to eat. Boy was I wrong. I started working as a diet tech, then applied for the internship. I’ve been in clinical ever since.”
Arnetta Fletcher
“Saw my mom sick with a nutrition-related condition as a child then subsequently engulfed by “health and wellness” supplement culture. She was desperate for improvement but I sensed its gimmick.
Once in high school, I had a clear love for health science. Had a choice to go into a food science focused pre-med program but was nervous about moving out of state. Spoke to the Dean of our local university, who introduced me to dietetics and my beloved Blue Hen Nation which I wanted to be apart of since a kid! It was a perfect fit!
Of course, I was introduced to astounding PhD, RDN and knew those were the credentials I wanted.
Best decision of my life to become a PhD, RDN, LDN”
