Why Learning to Cook May Not Solve Food Insecurity

Learning to Cook Won’t Solve Hunger – Reintroducing justice and dignity to food banking (aninaestrem.com). This post by Anina Estrem makes some good points. Is the issue with food insecurity or hunger because someone doesn’t know how to cook or won’t cook dried beans? Or is it because they have no transportation? No fridge? No stove or pots/pans or cooking utensils? Because they work 2 or more minimum wage jobs and have children or elderly parents to care for? Because most of their income goes to childcare or medical costs?

This is a small study from 2015 with 10 men and 10 women but interesting results: "Mixing alcohol with diet beverages can result in higher blood alcohol concentrations (BrACs) when compared to the same amount of alcohol administered with a similar sweetened beverage. Individuals who consume diet mixers with alcohol may reduce caloric intake but increase the harms associated with higher BrACs.”
