The Build Up Book Mark is a special newsletter just for paid subscriber featuring news/posts over the past week that are of special interest to dietitians.

Top Post Last Week - Kevin Klatt’s Kombucha Meme

May be an image of 3 people, drink and text that says 'kcklatt Kombucha is really good for you right? I can't say. We barely have any data on it!'

This post/image reached over 12.6K people with a number of reactions and comments - so obviously it struck a chord. Many dietitians may have fallen into the trap of recommending kombucha as a probiotic beverage but where’s the proof?

1. If the kombucha is a pasteurized, shelf stable product it probably has little/no probiotics
2. Refrigerated kombucha can have a range of probiotics.
3. Kombucha may have a range of ALCOHOL amounts (though in US it has to have less than 0.5% to legally be sold as a non-alcoholic beverage)
4. Kombucha can have a range of SUGAR amount & therefore CALORIES
5. Kombucha can range in PRICE and often be much more expensive than other beverage choices.
