💡Spotlight: Meet Asiya AbdulRahmeen

Dietitian in the MALDIVES (1 of only 7 in the whole country!)

Question #1: Why did you want to become a dietitian?

“I used to work as a lab technologist before becoming a dietitian. There was so much about diet and nutrition which made me wonder what the truth is. I wanted to know more about food with evidence. So, I changed my career by studying dietetics.”

Question #2: What is a day like for you as a dietitian in the Maldives?

“As I work in the busiest hospital, I’ve to attend to the long waiting queue of patients in addition to the all the inpatients. Every single day brings new challenges as the number of dietitians is so scarce. Here dietetics is at the baby stage, and we have work very hard to get the work of dietitians recognized. We have to develop everything including guidelines and protocols anew. I was in the core technical team in making of food based dietary guidelines. We still need to develop our protocols and guidelines for hospitals. So far, we are just following international guidelines.”
