Question #1: What do you do now as a dietitian?
Answer: “I have my own practice where I see patients with digestive issues and seeking weight management. I also work for a clinic specializing in Bariatric surgery and help them with the pre and post intervention and with changing eating habits. I have recently applied for a new job and will start teaching Dietetics at university in September, which I am very excited about.”
Question #2: What advice would you give someone who is considering a career in dietetics?
Answer: “It is a wonderful profession, but you need to be willing to spend time and money to stay up to date. It also can take a emotional toll as you get to know many stories and need to be prepared for that but it is incredibly rewarding.”
Andrew Akhaphong, MS, RD, LD
Through his work in retail dietetics and in long-term care, Andrew offers valuable insight.

Question #1: What do you currently do as a dietitian?
“I work as a corporate registered dietitian for a grocery retail chain in Minnesota. My role encompasses many facets. This includes consumer and brand relations, nutrition marketing and communications, community programming, and employee wellness.”
Question #2: What nutrition topic or question in the Build Up Dietitians LTC group that you help moderate really made an impression on you?
“This group is challenging in the sense that everyone approaches geriatric nutrition differently. Though these settings have to abide by CMS regulations; state regulations and facility policies can dictate nutrition practice in the care of the residents. That is why it can be difficult to agree on recommendations or incorporate recommendations from our peers.” ‘
📚Book Pick -“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”
by Rebecca Skloot
This is a story of poor black woman whose cells, without her knowledge or permission, were used to start industries, and fuel medical and scientific research that developed life-saving medications and vaccines.
🎧A good companion to this book is the podcast episode on Henrietta Lacks from This Podcast Will Kill You.
🛒Amazon Store
Don’t forget, we have a Build Up Dietitians Amazon Store where we curate all sorts of things that may be of interest to dietitians…books, notebooks, kitchen gadgets, gardening tools, posters, hats, t-shirts…all with a food/nutrition/dietitian theme.

Nutrition Misinformation has Arrived to LinkedIn | LinkedIn
“LinkedIn was previously the platform that we could still rely on to solely be a business relationship building, job seeking space and be free from [bogus] noise. Unfortunately, many "health gurus" are now coming over here to try to spread the bad and false news when it comes to your nourishment.”

Substack - Immunologic: FDA Revokes Approval of Bromated Vegetable Oil
From Dr. Andrea Love
FDA revokes approval of brominated vegetable oil (BVO); science in action.
“Large beverage manufacturers such as PepsiCo and Coca-Cola have already transitioned away from BVO use.
A few that this still applies to are Walmart brand (Great Value) Orangette and Fruit Punch drinks, Keurig Dr Pepper Sun Drop soda, H-E-B Orange Burst Cane Sugar Soda, and Food Lion Diet Orange Soda.”
Substack: Charcuterie: The Ultimate Party Flex
This is an entertaining read, “…Now for the cheeses. No fewer than 27 varieties will do. Personally import the cheese from France, if need be. Ensure that they are strategically placed so as to look visually appealing. Each chunk must have its own marble-handled cheese knife. Optional: mark the varieties with signage so people understand what they are committing to when selecting the stinkier varieties. If you exercise this option, you MUST have party-themed signs and calligraphy writing.”
