💡Spotlight: 2️⃣ questions for Farm Babe (Michelle Miller)

Question #1: Why do you think it's important for dietitians to understand about farming and agriculture and go on in-person or virtual tours.
“Dietitians are on the frontlines of engaging with consumers, and it’s important to be as informed as possible. There is a lot of misinformation out there, and as credible experts, dietitians can easily help people wade through the media noise. Farmers are busy people that are generally in small towns and may not have a big media presence. It’s important we help share their messages.”
Question #2: What's one question about farming/agriculture you get asked most frequently and how do you answer it?
“…I think it’s debunking the “big farms are bad farms” myth. Farming is just like any other business- you must do the right thing and create a quality product in order to “grow.” The largest farms tend to have more credible experts on staff full time and have the strictest regulations. Any farm can do a great job regardless of size or label, and the largest farms are the most responsible for global food systems security.”

🙋♀️❓Question in our Build Up Dietitians CAREERS group
Answers:
Jennifer C. “I would tell that person that we all have our feelings about what is correct for us. However, our profession is not about agenda. It is about the evidence-based practice and patient-centered care. If you cannot do that then this may not be the profession for you. The fact is that a student does not know what they do not know…”
Rachel D. “In my current Master’s program another student basically dismissed an entire unit on orthorexia, praising those who are “dedicated” to their nutrition dogma…”
Carrie R-C. “In school there was a student who was raw vegan. She refused to be open to the teachings of other diets, she refused to try other foods, and was dismissive of anything that didn’t support her beliefs of her raw vegan diet. The professor was blunt with her about being so closed minded and she decided to drop out…”

1.For those of you who used to read the print or on-line version of the Food & Nutrition Magazine by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, word came out May 1st that this publication has now shuttered its digital version as well.
2. Article by Katie Suleta on Lifestyle Medicine
ACSH Explains: Lifestyle Medicine | American Council on Science and Health
“Lifestyle Medicine seems to offer an individual solution to more systemic issues. The people who can afford to access Lifestyle Medicine physicians are likely not the ones who need it. The ones who can’t afford Lifestyle Medicine are likely the ones who need it the most…. Lifestyle Medicine does not appear to bring a new perspective to the table. Instead, its old ideas were rebranded for a new wellness era.”
3. Article: NYC Warning Labels for Sugary Food or Drink in Chain Restaurants
“New York City residents may soon see warning labels next to sugary foods and drinks in chain restaurants and coffee shops…The rule requires food businesses with 15 storefronts or more to post a warning icon — a black and white spoon loaded with sugar — next to menu items containing at least 50 grams of added sugar.
Businesses will also have to post the following written label to accompany the logo: “Warning: indicates that the added sugar content of this item is higher than the total daily recommended limit of added sugar for a 2,000 calorie diet (50g). Eating too many added sugars can contribute to type 2 diabetes and weight gain.”
