💡Spotlight: 2️⃣Questions for Dietitian Alyssa Pike
Website: International Food Information Council (IFIC)
Website: Food Insight (the Nutrition and Food Safety Hub of IFIC )
Q1: What is your role at IFIC and what do you like best about it?
“My role at IFIC has spanned various departments in the almost seven years I’ve worked at this organization. I’ve scanned nutrition headlines, translated nutrition research, created compelling social media communications, served as a sound resource to media outlets, developed consumer research, managed our educational webinar series, and delivered numerous stakeholder briefings and meetings. I’ve learned the value of critical thinking, grown in my interpersonal relationships, and worked hard to balance the need to advocate for nutrition science while meeting specific audiences where they are… I get to work with government representatives, industry, academia and health professionals, leveraging consumer insights to develop genuinely useful nutrition/science/food safety communication resources.
Q2: IFIC has a new tool “Understanding and Interpreting Health and Scientific Studies” – why is this important for dietitians? (click here for tool)
“I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a scientist, and I’ve had to learn how to critically review scientific studies and make sense of their findings amidst the larger body of evidence. There’s a lot of sensationalized nutrition and food headlines that can be difficult to sift through. This resource serves as a critical tool for dietitians, media communicators and beyond to navigate nutrition research and headlines in a thoughtful and useful way.”
