Q1: What's the goal of your new platform (ImmunoLogic)and why do you think it may be of value to dietitians?
“… to provide a conduit for credible fact-based information on topics related to immunology, microbiology, scientific principles, and the wellness industry….
For dietitians, that is immediately relevant with so much nutrition and food misinformation…whether it is about fad diets that don't have scientific plausibility or evidence, exaggerated and unfounded claims about specific food chemicals, pesticides, ingredients, or about the myriad of 'wellness interventions' like dietary supplements that they and their clients are surrounded by in the sphere of nutrition…”
Q2: What's one thing that you wish more dietitians knew or realized about vitamin and mineral supplements?
“…They are not regulated for quality, safety, or efficacy like FDA-regulated medications are, but fall into an intentional loophole created by the 1994 DSHEA. This also means that they do not have clinical trial data to support their claims they make…. (While) legally, DSHEA prohibits them from making certain statements, (because) the FDA cannot intervene until after a product is on the shelves…
Ultimately, we need to communicate to the public that supplements are not benign things to consume. Aside from the lack of evidence, there are harms associated with them, even when considering vitamins and minerals that are essential micronutrients. With everything, the dose makes the poison, and you CAN overdose on things that you need for optimal health, including water, including vitamin C, including iron, etc. We must shift the mentality away from the appeal to nature fallacy, and always promote getting your essential nutrients from foods instead of supplements.”
