🐄Raw Milk: Denying Science and Food Safety
Build Up Dietitians friend, Food Science Babe, posted this excellent reel (hyperlink) and BOY OH BOY did it create a 💩storm on her platform. The same happened, although to a lesser extent, on our Facebook page, when we posted her reel. Lots of logical fallacies and plenty of anecdotes from readers or based on what they’ve heard from others: “…grew up drinking raw milk and it never hurt me.”, “…don’t trust the CDC”, and “The only reason we need pasteurized milk is because of factory farms.”
Apparently, some people have forgotten about the bacteria and pathogens that cause disease and illnesses that can be found in raw milk, thanks to: Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium, E. coli, Listeria, Brucella, and Salmonella… “Some people who drank raw milk have developed severe or even life-threatening diseases, including Guillain-Barré syndrome, which can cause paralysis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can result in kidney failure, stroke, and even death.”
Or what if you learned that a bout of food borne illness could end up causing IBS? Post-Infectious IBS | Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment | ibs-smart (ibssmart.com)
Bacteria and pathogens in raw milk have nothing to do with the size of the farm or whether it’s local or whether you know the farmer. But it may have everything to do with cleanliness and milking practices and the fact that raw milk can have bacteria and pathogens from the cow’s milk, its saliva and manure (feces) as well as through improper handling and lack of refrigeration of the raw milk.
Think foodborne illnesses due to raw milk aren’t a thing? These are the headlines that happen on a monthly basis, and sometimes weekly:

Bottom Line: Whether your state does or doesn’t regulate and allow the sale; of raw milk, drinking it can be risky, particularly so for young children, the elderly, infants and individuals with a compromised immune system. Pasteurized milk offers plenty of health benefits without the risk. Don’t run the risk of food borne illness that may cause you additional long-term health problems and expense.
