💡Side Hustle Spotlight: RD & Sports Official

Tracy Janecek, MS, RD, LDN

Connect with Tracy on LinkedIn HERE

Q#1: What do you do in your current job as a dietitian and what’s your side hustle?

Answer: “My role is a pretty standard clinical inpatient RD…My current side hustle is working as a sports official for the IHSA in Illinois. I serve as a referee in spring and fall for girls’ and boys’ volleyball, a starter for cross country, and a starter or field event official for track and field (indoor and outdoor).”

Q#2: What do you like best about this side hustle and do you have any long terms plans for this?

Answer: “I actually had originally hoped to become a sports dietitian. I had been a year-round athlete through high school and college…Now I am part of high school sports for most of the year and feel better balanced between that and working in the inpatient setting. I don't have any long-term plans or goals for the side hustle at this time, but I think it would be fun to be assigned as a state series official in any of my sports.”

Q#3: “Do any of the skills you learned or acquired as a RD help you with this?”
Answer: “Observation and teaching skills acquired as an RD help me at every sporting event when assessing for things like jewelry or proper uniforms or teaching young athletes about proper position on the volleyball court to avoid a penalty. I also feel like I have an easier time keeping track of things like order of events at a track meet or number of timeouts taken in volleyball because we mentally have to keep track of so many things every day as a dietitian.”

✍🏽Survey

Every year we try and do a survey to get the pulse of the Build Up Dietitians community (RDs, RD2B, nutrition students).

We ask questions to figure out what people like, what they’re looking for and how we can do a better job.

The survey closes on 11/18. On 11/19 we’ll use a random generator and pick 4 (four) people who filled the survey out and each will receive a $25 Amazon gift card. (Sorry, we can only send this out to US and Canada).
