Q#1: What do you currently do as a dietitian?
“…In addition to being a registered dietitian in both countries (Canada & the US), I am also a Certified Health Education Specialist and consult for health-related program design, implementation, and evaluation. I do some individual nutrition counseling in my business that incorporates culinary medicine and intuitive eating and am part of a Culinary Medicine Practice Group that is made up of both US and Canadian dietitians…I also work on contract for other practice groups, such as Allara, a women’s health provider in the US, and Nutrition Rehabilitation (Canadian), where I manage the nutritional needs of clients who are recovering from acquired brain injury or spinal cord injury following a motor vehicle accident. In addition to this work, I do quite a bit of content development and writing for various entities in both countries, such as recipe development, writing, and photography, nutrition textbook revisions, webinars and speaking engagements, and even cookbook indexing…”.
Q#2: How do you think being a dietitian is different in Canada than in the United States?
Answer: “…The needs and appreciation for nutrition are different between the two countries…The culture around food is different so I have had to develop a new understanding of that food culture in order to be most effective as a dietitian in Canada. Another difference is in the variety of roles available to dietitians. In the US, dietitians are in a wider variety of care settings and even industries beyond clinical care. In Canada, the dietitian role is still viewed more traditionally…you don’t see as many RDs working in different areas of dietetics or outside of clinical dietetics….”
❓Question of the Day
Reva B. “Found the sessions very educational (and learned I’m behind the curve on AI), loved catching up with my network and expanding it… and of course the expo hall… came home with nearly 15 pounds of goods…but found some good items we might add to the menu.”
Lacie F. “…favorite part is always seeing friends and graduates from across the country. The weather was beautiful, and I had some great meals. AND (The Academy) hosted several focus groups and I’m feeling hopeful about future changes in the organization.”
Rachel E. “Yes! I loved it! The best part was all I learned from people!!”
Carol “I was only at the EXPO. Best- the people! Worst - a zero sugar "electrolyte drink" claiming to be an oral rehydration solution.”

🙋🏽♂️Build Up DIABETES Group
Ashley L. “…People with type 1 diabetes do not need comments from the peanut gallery regarding their food choices.”
Sarah T. “Within healthcare- more willingness by hospitalists and ER to understand diabetes …that an ER visit with ketones due to illness does not equate to “poor control” or “noncompliance” …That type 1 education/referral needs to be done for adult onset/LADA because I see SO many adults that have NO clue what ketones are/what to do when sick.”
Ashlyn W. “It’s more of an “invisible illness” than people realize. When you’re not trying to calculate how much insulin you need…you’re either changing a CGM or pump site or figuring out insurance stuff.”
