🧜🏽♀️Dietitian Side Hustles: Mermaid (& Dietitian)
Maria Cammarota
Q#1: What do you do in your "day job" as a dietitian?
Answer: “Until September, I worked as an inpatient clinical dietitian at a hospital. Currently, I work remotely as a telehealth dietitian, offering nutrition counseling and support via virtual platforms…. I also provide guidance on accessing community resources and support services to help clients further improve their health and well-being.”
Q#2: What is your "side hustle" and how/why did you get into this and is it for fun? creative outlet? extra money?
Answer: “My “side hustle” is… a mermaid and a powerlifter. Ever since I was a child, I’ve felt an unbreakable connection to the water….I spent hours exploring local beaches, rivers, and any body of water I could find, developing a love for marine life and a desire to protect it…I became a PADI-certified open water diver…But I wanted to take it further and connect with the water in a more imaginative way. That’s when I discovered mermaiding. I trained to become an advanced mermaid swimmer, honing my skills in breath control, swimming with a monofin….It’s a surreal experience—part art, part adventure. On land, I’m also dedicated to building physical strength through powerlifting. This training complements my mermaid work, helping me become more powerful, agile, and enduring in the water…
Though mermaiding started as a creative outlet, I’ve had opportunities to turn it into a side business. I’ve performed at events, collaborated with environmental organizations, and even taught people how to swim like mermaids. But what I enjoy most is using my platform to inspire others, teaching them about the wonders of the underwater ecosystem and the importance of marine conservation. Whether I’m in costume or just diving into a conversation about ocean health, my goal is always the same: to share the magic of the water and encourage others to protect it for future generations…” .
