đŽđĄSpotlight: 2ď¸âŁQuestions for âCow Nerdâ - Kathryn Bosley

Question #1: What's your background or education when it comes to dairy farming and why did you want to start a Facebook page?Â
Answer: âI grew up on my family's small dairy farm in Northern NY, which inspired me to earn a B.S. in Animal Science from SUNY Cobleskill. That led to me now finishing up my M.S. in Animal Science focused on dairy cattle genetics, with plans to pursue my PhD next. I started my "Cow Nerd" page almost 5 years ago with the goal of connecting the public with the science and people behind agriculture, with a focus on dairy farming.â
Question #2: What's one question about dairy cows or milk that comes up most frequently and how do you answer it?Â
âOne of the most common misconceptions I hear is that dairy farmers don't care about our cows. Healthy, well-cared for animals make more high-quality products. A common saying is "if we take care of them, they take care of us." Animal welfare and profitability ultimately work together, so that we have the resources to further improve animal welfare. Farming is often still a lifestyle as well as a business, largely a family business with 97% of U.S. farms being family owned. We're also people with our own ethics and morals for stewarding our animals.â
đ´Meals from Convenience Stores
(spotted on LinkedIn)
â⌠I purchased foods from 7-Eleven for my cooking demo and talk on nutrition and substance use disorder. I wanted to demonstrate that you can indeed purchase nutritious foods at convenience storesâŚâ - Gabrielle Simons, MS, RD, LDN
Have you ever done a meal preparation or cooking demo featuring ingredients and foods from a convenience store like a 7-11, Wawa, Dollar Store/Family Dollar/Dollar General?

đGrifters Gotta Grift
Ten years ago, they were promoting detoxes, cleanses and food sensitivity testsâŚfive years ago it was microbiome testing and âleaky gutâ. During the Pandemic it was âboosting immunityâ with food and supplements. Now, itâs hormone balancing and anti-inflammatory diets. Bet you know some people who just move from grift to grift with the common denominator of selling supplements, restrictive diets, diet books and tests that are not medically proven or evidence based.
